We never read the article. We take what is published in the open: the headline, the outlet, and the timestamp. A headline from a paper of record is itself a signal that something happened. We then search the free press for the same specific event and build the brief from that reporting instead, so the substance you read is always sourced from coverage we can actually see.

The paywalled original is still cited and still linked. If you subscribe to it, open it and read it in full — the link is there for exactly that. What you should never have to do is pay for a subscription just to find out whether a story mattered to you.

Practically: we do not scrape gated article bodies, use archive mirrors, or strip metering. If a story only ever appears behind one paywall and nobody else covers it, you get the headline and the citation, and the brief says so.
