US-Iran War Escalates Across Middle East, Threatening Global Shipping and Stability

Executive SummaryAI-generated

What Happened

The US and Iran have entered a sustained cycle of military strikes and counter-strikes, drawing in Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, and Yemen while choking two of the world's most critical oil shipping corridors. Iran's IRGC has asserted territorial control over the Strait of Hormuz, forcing tankers to retreat, while Houthi forces blockade Saudi shipping in the Red Sea. Mediators report fragile progress toward talks, but ceasefire hopes have dimmed as Trump signals further strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure.

Why It Happened

The conflict's roots lie in the June 2025 Israeli aerial campaign against Iranian nuclear sites, which triggered an escalatory spiral now pulling the US into direct sustained combat operations against Iran. Iran's retaliation strategy leverages its proxy network—Hezbollah, Houthis, and Iraqi militias—to impose costs across multiple theaters simultaneously. The US decision to partner with Saudi Arabia in strikes on Iraqi militias marks a coalition-building phase that deepens regional entrenchment.

What to Watch Out For

In the short term, strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure could trigger retaliatory attacks on Gulf oil facilities, sending global energy markets into crisis with cascading effects on every sector including legal tech's cloud and data infrastructure costs. Over the next decade, this conflict may redraw the Middle East's security architecture entirely, accelerating de-dollarization efforts and alternative shipping routes that reshape global trade. At an epochal scale, we are witnessing the first direct great-power-versus-regional-power war over fossil fuel chokepoints—a conflict that will either hasten or delay the energy transition, with consequences for the trajectory of human civilization's relationship with carbon.
